A car plunged into the waters off the coast of Sri Lanka has been rescued and taken to hospital after being hit by a boat.
A witness said a woman was taken by the boat and dragged into the water.
“We came upon a small boat and heard a loud splash,” said Sanjay Bhatia, a local resident.
“The woman was dragged into it, and then there was a strong gust of wind that brought her down.”
The incident occurred at about 11am local time (0600 GMT) on Thursday.
“The woman is unconscious and has been taken to the hospital,” Sri Lankan navy spokesperson, Captain Jayakumar Singh said.
“A medical report has been submitted to the police.”
Indian police have asked locals to stay away from the area and to not try and rescue the woman, because they are “extremely cautious”.
“People must avoid any contact with the woman,” Captain Singh said in a tweet.
A Sri Lankian army official said the navy had been alerted to the incident and was on high alert in the area.
The woman has been identified as S.R. Sharma, a resident of Kallangamari in Kandy district.
She is a resident and a teacher at a school near Kandy city.
Earlier this month, the boat sank off the Sri Lankese coast.
Sri Lankan officials have also warned locals to avoid trying to help the woman.
On Thursday, the coastguard received a distress call from a woman in a boat that had been badly damaged, said Captain Singh.
At least 10 people were rescued from the boat.
This is a developing story.
