Why China will not pay for the US’s Keystone XL pipeline

CHINA — China has ruled out paying for the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline in a deal with the U.S. and has warned that it will not give up its strategic interests in oil.
President Xi Jinping said China will continue to protect its strategic interest in the oil sector, including its Silk Road Belt that links Asia to Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, the state news agency Xinhua reported Sunday.
“The country will protect its interests in the Silk Road and other strategic areas, and will not accept the United States’s proposal to sell the oil in the United Kingdom and other countries to satisfy the pressure exerted by the Americans and other Western countries,” Xinhua quoted Xi as saying.
China will not permit the United State to sell oil to its strategic customers in Asia, Xinhua said.
