Silk Road: The Story Behind the Silk Road’s Hidden Lives
Posted On August 5, 2021
Silk Road was the first to make a living from illegal drugs, and it was one of the first websites to reach the mainstream, with its first user in 2006.
It is still the biggest online drug marketplace, with more than 11 million listings of items like weed, heroin and cocaine, and nearly $70 million in daily revenue.
But it has struggled with the increasing popularity of other websites.
Today, Silk Road is worth a little more than $1 billion.
Its founder, Ross Ulbricht, was arrested in October 2018, and he was sentenced to life in prison in November 2019.
But he was freed last month after serving only two years of his sentence, and Ulbrich is currently living at the US’s John Peter Smith Correctional Centre.
“The Silk Road website was the catalyst that led to the Silk Route being born,” Mr Ulbrith says.
The Silk Route is a web site run by the internet’s most notorious criminals, known as the Darknet.
It was founded in 2013, and was first used to sell drugs, weapons and other illegal items.
In 2015, it was hacked and shut down.
Mr Ulbith says it was a mistake that lead to the downfall of Silk Road.
He says the site was used to facilitate illegal drug transactions by criminals who were selling drugs, which made them more powerful and more accessible to the masses.
What makes Silk Road so special?
Mr Ulbreth says the Silk route was the “first time that the world saw a global drug market.”
“We were the first one to reach a mass market, and we were able to take drugs online, and the people that were on the Silk road were able get access to the internet, so that was the beginning of the Silk economy,” he says.
“What’s different about the Silk Market is that now we’re the ones that are the most important and the biggest, and that’s what we’re going to continue to be.”
The FBI arrested Silk Road founder Ross Ulbich and his brother and a friend in October.

Mr Ulbritt says the reason the Silk world was successful was because of a community of individuals that had a passion for the world of drugs.
This community, he says, came together in an effort to spread the message of freedom and justice.
We were not the first people to create a drug market.
However, it is the first time that a community has been able to put a price on drugs and put a stop to it.”
Mr Boon has been in the business for more than 40 years.
He says the future is uncertain.
He has been working on a book on the history of the drug trade for more of the past 30 years, and is working on the next book, which will be set in the Silk Roads world.
“We’ll have a new book, and a new title,” he tells News.au.
I don’t think it’s going to be the end of me, I’m sure, but it’s certainly the beginning.”
